Week 2 Star Wars: A New Hope Lighting
TITLE: Star Wars: A New Hope
WRITERS: George Lucas
DIRECTORS: George Lucas
ACTORS: Carrie Fischer, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford
Identify the type of lighting used in the film (traditional three-point, high-key, or low-key) and assess the impact of the lighting used to establish the theme.
◦What are the benefits of the style of lighting used?
◦How did this technique contribute to the theme?
◦How was the lighting technique suited to the genre of the film? For example, documentary films tend to rely on natural light as a way of creating an overall tone of authenticity.
The lighting used in Star Wars: A New Hope is traditional lighting. The director George Lucas also used a lot of natural lighting and also the environment that the scenes are in to create this lighting. This helps the theme out tremendously because of all the moving parts of each scene. In order to take in this galaxy you need to actually see what is going and low key would not have achieved this. In the Mos Eisley scene on Tatooine they use the suns and the setting sun to achieve the lighting. In the cantina they use the dim lights to light the table where you meet Han Solo. On the ship at the beginning of the film the wall are white and the ships natural lights is in the ceiling above. The space scenes cannot be too dark because space is dark but you still need to see what was going on. So the traditional three point lighting was the way to go. In the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon the lights are in the typical three point shots as to see each actor clearly. I believe that this is perfectly suited to this type of genre of film perfectly.
Compare how the scene would play if different choices had been made.
If Star Wars was shot in high or low key I think that the whole film would set a different tone. If it was low key then of course the film would have darker implications like horror films. If the film was shot in high key I believe that the movie would not be realistic looking and would almost be laughable.
